Asian Journal of Psychiatry and Mental Health

Asian Journal of Psychiatry and Mental Health (AJPMH) is dedicated to publishing high-quality, peer-reviewed research focused on mental health issues, psychiatric disorders, and psychological well-being, particularly within the Asian context. The journal aims to bridge the gap between clinical research, therapeutic interventions, and mental health policies, providing a platform for psychiatrists, psychologists, neuroscientists, and healthcare professionals to contribute to the advancement of mental health care. AJPMH emphasizes the importance of culturally sensitive mental health approaches, acknowledging the diverse sociocultural influences on psychiatric conditions and treatment outcomes.
The scope of AJPMH includes a broad range of topics in psychiatry and mental health, including but not limited to mood disorders, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, neurodevelopmental disorders, psychopharmacology, addiction psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, suicide prevention, and trauma-related disorders. The journal also welcomes studies on mindfulness-based interventions, cognitive-behavioral therapy, public mental health strategies, and digital mental health applications. Special attention is given to interdisciplinary research integrating psychiatry, neurology, psychology, and social sciences, as well as mental health policy and service development to improve patient care and mental well-being.
AJPMH encourages contributions in the form of original research articles, review papers, case studies, short communications, and clinical reports. By fostering collaborations among mental health professionals and policymakers, the journal seeks to enhance evidence-based mental health practices, reduce stigma, and improve access to psychiatric care in diverse populations. The journal supports open-access publishing, ensuring that valuable research findings are widely accessible to researchers, clinicians, and policymakers worldwide.
Mood Disorders
Mood disorders refer to a broad category of mental health conditions that primarily affect an individual’s emotional state. These include major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder, and dysthymia. Mood disorders can significantly impair daily functioning, relationships, and overall quality of life. Research in this area explores the biological, genetic, and environmental factors contributing to these conditions, as well as pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment options. AJPMH focuses on understanding cultural variations in mood disorders, improving diagnostic accuracy, and evaluating innovative treatment strategies to enhance patient outcomes.
Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety disorders encompass a range of mental health conditions characterized by excessive worry, fear, and nervousness, often interfering with daily activities. These include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and phobias. Studies in AJPMH examine the neurobiological mechanisms underlying anxiety, cognitive and behavioral therapy techniques, medication efficacy, and alternative treatment approaches such as mindfulness and exposure therapy. The journal also explores the impact of sociocultural factors on anxiety prevalence and treatment-seeking behaviors in different Asian communities.
Schizophrenia and Psychotic Disorders
Schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders involve disturbances in thought processes, emotions, and behavior, often leading to delusions, hallucinations, and impaired social functioning. Research in this area focuses on the neurodevelopmental, genetic, and environmental factors contributing to these disorders, along with advancements in antipsychotic medications, cognitive remediation therapies, and psychosocial interventions. AJPMH highlights studies on early detection and intervention, personalized treatment approaches, and strategies for integrating individuals with schizophrenia into society to improve their quality of life.
Neurodevelopmental Disorders
Neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and intellectual disabilities, affect cognitive, social, and emotional development. These conditions often require multidisciplinary interventions involving psychiatry, psychology, special education, and speech therapy. AJPMH publishes research on early diagnosis, behavioral and pharmacological interventions, and educational strategies to support individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders, focusing on culturally adapted care models suitable for diverse Asian populations.
Psychopharmacology
Psychopharmacology is the study of how medications influence mental health conditions and brain function. This field examines the effectiveness, safety, and side effects of psychiatric drugs, including antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and anxiolytics. AJPMH features studies on novel drug developments, pharmacogenetics, medication adherence, and the role of complementary and alternative medicine in psychiatric care. The journal also explores challenges related to polypharmacy and optimizing treatment regimens for patients with co-occurring psychiatric conditions.
Addiction Psychiatry
Addiction psychiatry focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of substance use disorders (SUDs), behavioral addictions, and co-occurring psychiatric conditions. The field covers research on alcohol and drug dependence, gambling disorder, internet addiction, and smoking cessation strategies. AJPMH encourages studies on the neurobiological basis of addiction, harm reduction approaches, pharmacological treatments such as methadone and buprenorphine, and culturally adapted rehabilitation programs. The journal also examines the impact of mental health stigma on addiction treatment outcomes.
Suicide Prevention
Suicide is a major public health concern, with significant psychological, social, and economic consequences. Research on suicide prevention involves identifying risk factors, crisis intervention strategies, and community-based mental health programs. AJPMH publishes studies on the effectiveness of suicide prevention hotlines, school-based mental health initiatives, cognitive and behavioral interventions, and policy-driven approaches to reducing suicide rates. The journal also explores the role of media and cultural beliefs in shaping attitudes toward suicide and mental health care.
Forensic Psychiatry
Forensic psychiatry bridges mental health and the legal system, addressing issues such as criminal responsibility, competency evaluations, risk assessment, and psychiatric care in correctional facilities. AJPMH welcomes studies on ethical dilemmas in forensic psychiatry, mental health laws in different Asian countries, and the rehabilitation of individuals with psychiatric disorders within the criminal justice system. Research in this area also explores the impact of trauma and childhood adversity on criminal behavior and forensic risk management strategies.
Trauma-Related Disorders
Trauma-related disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex trauma, arise from exposure to severe stressors such as violence, natural disasters, and childhood abuse. These conditions can lead to long-term emotional distress, cognitive impairments, and social difficulties. AJPMH highlights research on trauma-informed care, therapeutic interventions like cognitive processing therapy (CPT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and the role of resilience in recovery. The journal also examines culturally specific coping mechanisms and their effectiveness in treating trauma-related disorders.
Digital Mental Health
Digital mental health encompasses the use of technology, including mobile apps, telepsychiatry, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality, to improve mental health diagnosis, treatment, and accessibility. AJPMH supports research on the effectiveness of digital interventions in reducing mental health disparities, increasing access to psychiatric services in remote areas, and personalizing treatment through data-driven approaches. The journal also explores ethical concerns, such as data privacy and the impact of social media on mental well-being.
