Abstract
Influenza viruses, notorious for their pandemic potential, maintain a complex ecology involving diverse animal reservoirs, particularly avian species. This perspective article explores the critical role these reservoirs play in the emergence of novel influenza strains capable of infecting humans. We delve into the mechanisms of interspecies transmission, the genetic factors facilitating host adaptation, and the implications for pandemic preparedness. Understanding the dynamics within animal reservoirs is paramount for proactive surveillance and the development of effective strategies to mitigate future influenza pandemics.
