Recombinant Interleukin-7 Therapy and JC Virus Granule Cell Neuronopathy in Chronic Lymphopenia

Abstract
JC virus (JCV) is a human polyomavirus that typically causes progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) in immunocompromised individuals. However, JCV can also infect cerebellar granule cells, leading to a distinct neurological condition known as JCV granule cell neuronopathy (JCV-GCN). This study reviews the pathogenesis of JCV-GCN, its occurrence in the context of chronic lymphopenia, and the potential therapeutic role of recombinant interleukin-7 (rIL-7) in these cases. We explore the mechanisms by which rIL-7 may influence the course of JCV-GCN, including both beneficial and potentially detrimental effects, such as immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS)
