Analyzing Brain Lentiviral Infections During Antiretroviral Treatment in AIDS

Abstract
Despite the success of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in suppressing systemic HIV-1 infection, the brain remains a sanctuary site where the virus can persist. This persistence contributes to the development of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). Mathematical modeling offers a valuable tool to investigate the complex dynamics of lentiviral infection in the brain during ART. This article reviews current research and models of lentiviral infection in the CNS, focusing on HIV-1. Key aspects of lentiviral neuropathogenesis, including viral entry into the brain, cellular targets, and the impact of ART on viral reservoirs, are explored. We also discuss the limitations of current models and highlight future directions for research
