Association Between Pro12Ala Polymorphism and Type 2 Diabetes Risk in Populations

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a multifactorial metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and pancreatic β-cell dysfunction. The PPARG gene encodes peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ); a nuclear receptor involved in regulating glucose homeostasis; adipogenesis; and lipid metabolism. The Pro12Ala polymorphism (rs1801282) in PPARG results in the substitution of proline (Pro) with alanine (Ala) at position 12 of the protein and is believed to influence the function of PPAR-γ; potentially modifying susceptibility to T2D.
