A Comparison Between CLNA and CLA Effects on Body Fat, Serum Parameters and Liver Composition

Abstract
Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) and Conjugated Linolenic Acid (CLNA) are isomers of polyunsaturated fatty acids that have garnered research interest for their potential health benefits, including effects on body composition, lipid metabolism, and liver health. This review aims to compare the effects of CLNA and CLA on body fat, serum parameters, and liver composition. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Studies involving animal models and human subjects were included to provide a broad perspective. The review indicates that CLA has shown more consistent results in reducing body fat mass, particularly in animal studies. Both CLA and CLNA can influence serum lipid profiles, though their effects on total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides vary. The impact of CLA and CLNA on liver composition, specifically regarding steatosis and lipid accumulation, is complex and appears to be dose- and species-dependent. Further research, especially well-designed human trials, is needed to fully elucidate the comparative effects of CLNA and CLA and to determine their optimal dosages and long-term safety.
